First World War Commemoration Event: A Poem by John Pratt

Holymoorside Bowling Club  has responded to the Parish council’s invitation to contribute to the WW1 Commemoration Event at the Village Hall on Saturday 23rd August in the the person of Moorside Writers’ John Pratt. He will present and read his poem, Summer Leaves, which refers to the price he and his family paid for his father’s brief participation in WW1.

Summer Leaves.

It left him stranded, his island
out of hailing distance.

My treble voice thrashed out words
for him (and all the world) to catch:

that ash had fallen on his waistcoat
or that I needed to go to the lavatory.

Took the stage through a curtain of shame
– enter with dumb dad.

We settled for barren facts: short on
conversations, no jokes.

The moment was for others: ‘Tell that to Dad.’
His deafness stuck in my throat.

Once he knew the land of waking sounds
consonants just caught,

secret undertones, the hush of a lover’s breath.

Until his eighteenth year
could hear the heave of full-leaved branches
in the breeze: promises

of summers down his English days; before those
all unspoken weeks in France.

The Grammar Years by John Pratt

My latest book , The Grammar Years, is to be launched at The Museum, Bexhill-on-Sea, on the afternoon of Monday 11th August. The book is sub-titled, ‘Town and School: Bexhill-on-Sea in the 1940’s and is about my experience of the years 1944-1951, from the time I started at Bexhill Grammar School for Boys, aged 11 until I left that school in 1951, then 18. The story is in three parts: SCHOOL, TOWN and HOME, each recalling characters and incidents, places and institutions that made my life the way it was then.

GOING PLACES

On an evening when heat hovered and sun competed with shade, Moorside Writers were going places. With the lively assistance of music from A Little Jazz, poetry and prose readings took the audience on a journey from the wild beauty of The Peak District to New Zealand, and back again.

Stopping off along the way in Ipanema, Tunisia, Vermont and New York, the band ended the performance with a vivacious performance of The Sheik of Araby.
The audience went home from St. Thomas’s Church Centre, Chesterfield with smiles on their faces.

If you’d like another opportunity to share the pleasures of travelling in words and music, the next performance will be on Friday September 26th at The Peel Centre, Dronfield, Derbsyhire.

Umbrella Umbrage

Bellied out umbrella umbrage

Soaked cover ripped spokes

Dancing tatters wrangled wind

Ruined bird ragged ribs

Dragged along limp and dangling

Aping pheasant for the pot

Dronfield Hall Barn - An Inspiration?

Dronfield Hall Barn is said to date from 1429 and Dronfield Heritage Trust have been fighting to turn the handsome building into an arts and heritage centre. Now a Lottery grant  of £1 million will make the vision come true and work starts soon.

Moorside Writers visited the Barn on 10th June to see it in its current state before work commences. It is likely to be a source of great inspiration so watch this space!
